Atlassian Data Center end of life in 60 seconds
- End of life: 28 March 2029. Data Center subscriptions and their Marketplace apps expire and become read-only.[1]
- Announced: 8 September 2025, as a sunset "phased over three years."[2]
- Already in effect: new customers have not been able to buy Data Center or Data Center apps since 30 March 2026.[1]
- Affected: Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Confluence and Crowd Data Center, plus Atlassian and third-party apps for them.[1]
- Not affected: Bitbucket, Bamboo and Jira Align Data Center.[1]
- For planning tools: anything that runs as an app inside Jira Data Center expires with it. A standalone tool that connects to Jira does not.
What is the Atlassian Data Center end of life?
Atlassian is ending its self-managed Data Center products. On 28 March 2029 at 23:59 PST, Data Center subscriptions and any associated Marketplace apps expire, and the products and apps become read-only. Atlassian's stated path forward is to move to its cloud.[1]
Atlassian announced the change on 8 September 2025: "we're announcing that we're sunsetting Atlassian Data Center products", phased over three years.[2] Its guidance to customers is direct: "To continue using existing impacted Atlassian products, you will need to move to cloud."[1]
This is a different event from the end of Server. Atlassian Server products have been unsupported since 15 February 2024.[3] Many organisations moved from Server to Data Center at that point. Data Center is the later and separate end of life.
What are the key dates?
There are four dates: 16 December 2025 (no new Data Center apps on the Marketplace), 30 March 2026 (no sales to new customers), 30 March 2028 (no new purchases or expansions for existing customers) and 28 March 2029 (end of life, read-only).
| Date | What changes |
|---|---|
| 8 September 2025 | Atlassian announces the sunset of Data Center[2] |
| 16 December 2025 | New Data Center apps can no longer be submitted to the Marketplace[4] |
| 30 March 2026 | New customers can no longer buy Data Center subscriptions or Marketplace Data Center apps[1] |
| 30 March 2028 | Existing customers can no longer buy new Data Center subscriptions, Marketplace apps or expansions[1] |
| 28 March 2029 | End of life. Subscriptions and Marketplace apps expire and become read-only[1] |
Until the end date Atlassian continues to provide technical support, security fixes for critical vulnerabilities, and connectors between Data Center and Cloud. Renewals cannot extend beyond 28 March 2029 and are prorated to that date.[1]
Which products are affected, and which are not?
Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Confluence and Crowd Data Center are affected, along with Atlassian's own Data Center apps and third-party Marketplace apps for those products. Bitbucket, Bamboo and Jira Align Data Center are excluded.
| Product | Status |
|---|---|
| Jira Software Data Center | Affected[1] |
| Jira Service Management Data Center | Affected[1] |
| Confluence Data Center | Affected[1] |
| Crowd Data Center | Affected[1] |
| Marketplace apps for those products | Affected. Licences expire with the host product[1] |
| Jira Plans (Advanced Roadmaps) on Data Center | Bundled in Jira Software Data Center since 8.15[5], so it goes with it |
| Bitbucket and Bamboo Data Center | Not affected. "Bitbucket and Bamboo Data Center will not end of life."[1] |
| Jira Align Data Center | Not affected. "Jira Align Data Center is not included in Data Center end of life."[1] |
| Jira, Confluence and apps on Atlassian Cloud | Not affected |
What happens after 28 March 2029?
Your data stays available in a read-only state, but you can no longer create or change work. Atlassian strongly advises against keeping a read-only instance connected to the internet, because it will no longer receive security fixes.[1]
Atlassian says it is "committed to offering extended maintenance for certain Data Center customers by exception" after that date, and that some customers may buy multi-year extensions by exception only.[1] That is a negotiated outcome, not a default, so it is not something to plan around.
What are your options?
Atlassian lists three options: migrate to its cloud, keep Bitbucket and Bamboo on a hybrid licence, or continue on Data Center for up to three years while you prepare. For Jira and Confluence the real choices are when and how to move to Cloud, or whether to move to a different platform.
Migrate to Atlassian Cloud
Atlassian has grouped its support into the Ascend programme.[2] What it offers depends on size:
- Fewer than 1,000 users: self-service migration tools.
- More than 1,000 users: the complimentary FastShift programme, which Atlassian says shortens migrations "from 12 to 16 months to just 2 to 6 months."
- More than 5,000 users: a Solution Design Acceleration programme.
Incentives on Atlassian's end-of-life page include cloud migration trials that last for the length of your Data Center subscription, step-up credits for unused maintenance, dual licensing for larger customers, and a possible 10 to 20% first-year discount on Cloud Enterprise for purchases by June 2027.[1] Atlassian is also plain about cost: "The per user cost of cloud is higher than Data Center."[1]
Regulated and government organisations
Atlassian points to its FedRAMP Moderate authorised Government Cloud and to Atlassian Isolated Cloud, a single-tenant offering.[2] If you chose Data Center for data control, check carefully which of these is available to you and when.
Stay on Data Center for now
Existing customers can renew until 28 March 2029 and buy expansions until 30 March 2028.[1] This buys preparation time. It does not change the end date.
What happens to Marketplace apps and their data?
Data Center app licences expire with the host product. Whether an app's data can move to Cloud depends on the app vendor: Atlassian states that the Marketplace Partner performs the app data migration, not Atlassian, and that some Data Center apps have no cloud version.[6]
This is the part of the migration most likely to be underestimated. Atlassian's migration documentation says:
- "The Marketplace Partner (vendor) that built each app has created a migration pathway to move the data", and the partner "will actually be performing the app data migration, not Atlassian."[6]
- Where there is no cloud equivalent, "you cannot migrate your app data to cloud for this app, until the Marketplace Partner builds a cloud app and migration path."[6]
- "The Cloud versions of some of your apps may function differently than their on-premise equivalents."[7]
For every app you depend on, ask the vendor three things: is there a Cloud version, is there a supported data migration path, and what is different in Cloud.
What does this mean for PI Planning and scaled agile tools?
PI Planning tools fall into two groups. Apps that run inside Jira Data Center expire with it and need a Cloud version and a data migration. Standalone tools that connect to Jira keep working, because they are not part of the Data Center licence.
| Tool | How it is delivered | Effect of the end of life |
|---|---|---|
| Jira Plans (Advanced Roadmaps) | Bundled in Jira Software Data Center[5] | Ends with Jira Software Data Center. Available in Jira Cloud Premium. |
| Easy Agile Programs | Marketplace app, Cloud and Data Center[8] | Data Center edition renewable until 28 March 2029.[9] Cloud edition continues. |
| BigPicture | Marketplace app, Cloud and Data Center[10] | Data Center edition expires with the host product.[1] Cloud edition continues. |
| Jira Align | Separate Atlassian product | Excluded from the end of life[1] |
| Kendis | Standalone application that connects to Jira | Not affected. The same boards connect to Jira Data Center and Jira Cloud. |
Where Kendis fits
Kendis is not a Marketplace app. It is a separate application that syncs two-way with Jira Data Center, Jira Cloud and Azure DevOps. That has three practical consequences during a migration:
- No planning freeze. A program board can hold teams that are still on Data Center and teams that have already moved to Cloud, so PI Planning does not wait for the migration to finish.
- No app data migration. Objectives, risks, dependencies and history live in Kendis. When a team's Jira moves, you point the connection at the new site.
- A choice of where the plan is hosted. If data control was the reason for Data Center, Kendis can be self-hosted or run on the European Cloud on OVHcloud in Frankfurt.

What should you do now?
Build an inventory of every Data Center product and app, find out which apps have a Cloud version and a migration path, and decide the order of migration well before 30 March 2028, when you can no longer buy expansions.
- List every Data Center product, its user tier and its renewal date.
- List every Marketplace app, who uses it and what data it holds.
- For each app, confirm with the vendor: Cloud version, data migration path, functional differences.
- Identify apps with no Cloud path and choose a replacement now.
- Decide your target: Atlassian Cloud, Government or Isolated Cloud, or another platform.
- Check data residency and regulatory requirements against the target.
- Plan the migration order by team or train, and keep cross-team planning running throughout.
- Set your final renewal so it does not run past 28 March 2029.
- Do not plan to run a read-only instance connected to the internet.
